This group focused on Healthy Relationships. The issues they were striving to prevent are Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
Communities included: Huslia, Circle, Nenana and Fairbanks
Participants surveyed people from 12-70 years old gathering information on the root causes of why there is Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in our villages.
Many people were very open and honest about their experiences with domestic violence and sexual assault. Here is a quote from one person that was interviewed:
I grew up in a haze of stale cigarette smoke, passed out bodies lying everywhere, the sound of my mom stirring her coffee forever because she was so drunk she didn't know what she was doing. I have watched my mother get beat up by her boyfriends and take turns raping her while she was passed out. I was SA 3 times as a kid..."
Nenana had an ice cream social with the youth in the community where they made videos focused on these issues and the impact they have on the youth. Stay tuned for more information on the videos.
Huslia and Circle tribal members hosted an event in their communities focused on the strengths that they already have and their theme was “Happy and Healthy Homes”.
There were couples who had been married for many years or just married, grandparents with their grandchild on a date, friends, siblings. They all got to share what they appreciate each other at this community date night and discuss what makes their home happy and how leadership can help.
"Talking about and taking action to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is a difficult challenge for communities after living with it "hidden" for generations. People are willing to take the charge now. Voices are getting louder. It's an exciting time with positive growth on the horizon."
